Why choose a boat over a plane?

There are many reasons why some people choose to travel by boat rather than by plane. Here are some of the potential advantages of traveling by boat:

A more relaxing experience: Traveling by boat can offer a more relaxed and peaceful experience than flying. You can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean or coastal scenery, stroll around the deck and relax during the crossing.

  1. Avoid security constraints and red tape: Unlike air travel, boat travel can be less subject to strict security constraints and intensive red tape. There can be fewer baggage restrictions, no intrusive security checks, and you can usually arrive on board the ship without having to go through multiple checkpoints.
  2. Ability to transport bulky items: Boats often offer more storage space and flexibility for transporting bulky items, such as bicycles, water sports equipment, bulky luggage, etc. This can be advantageous for people traveling with special equipment, or for a move to Corsica.
  3. Immersive experience and destination discovery: Traveling by boat can allow you to discover destinations and landscapes in a more immersive way. You can enjoy the excitement of approaching ports, explore ports of call along the way and discover different cultures and landscapes as you travel.
  4. Onboard entertainment and convenience options: Many cruise ships and ferries offer a variety of onboard activities and entertainment, such as restaurants, shows, stores, pools, spas and more. This can add to the travel experience and make the journey more enjoyable.

It's important to note that the benefits of boat travel can vary depending on the type of trip, destination and individual preferences.

The choice between boat and plane will depend on factors such as distance, time available, budget, convenience and personal preference.

It's a good idea to take these factors into account when deciding which option best suits your travel situation.

What do people think of Corsica Ferries?

Opinions about Corsica Ferries may vary according to passengers' individual experiences.

Here is an overview of the general opinions expressed by users:

Advantages :

  1. Competitive prices: Many passengers appreciated the affordable fares offered by Corsica Ferries, especially for crossings between mainland France and Corsica or Sardinia.
  2. Crossing frequency: Corsica Ferries offers a wide choice of crossings throughout the year, giving passengers flexibility in planning their journeys.
  3. Comfort on board: Corsica Ferries ships are often considered comfortable, with well-equipped cabins, restaurants, bars, stores and other facilities to make the journey enjoyable.

Disadvantages :

  1. Potential delays: some passengers have reported occasional delays in the departure or arrival times of Corsica Ferries ferries, which may cause inconvenience in planning the journey.
  2. Peak season crowds: During peak periods and vacations, ferries can be crowded, which can lead to a less comfortable experience and longer waiting times.
  3. Variable customer service: Opinions of Corsica Ferries' customer service were mixed, with some passengers reporting friendly and efficient assistance, while others expressed frustration with responsiveness and problem resolution.

It's important to note that opinions may vary from person to person, depending on their expectations, specific experience and other individual factors.

We recommend that you read several reviews, consider the factors important to your own journey, and weigh up the pros and cons before making a decision about Corsica Ferries or any other shipping service.

The history of Corsica ferries?

The beginning

The company was founded by the famous Corsican businessman Pascal Lota in 1968. For the first 15 years, the company, formerly known as Corsica Line, developed its first market: passenger crossings between Corsica and Italy.

Several years of growth enabled Corsica Ferries to open a route to Sardinia in 1982, and then on to the French market. First Nice in 1996 and Toulon in 2000.

Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, initially focusing on low-cost products, the yellow boat has gradually become synonymous with comfort and quality of service. It became the market leader in the 2000s.

In 1981, Corsica Ferries decided to acquire the Italian company Sardinia Ferries, which joined the Corsica Ferries group, a shipping company offering crossings between Sardinia and Italy.

Great moments

The Sardinia Nova boat was the first yellow ferry linking Livorno and Olbia.

In 1987, the fleet was reinforced with the addition of Sardinia Vera.

1996 Opening of the Nice-Corsica line with NGV Corsica Express.

The accelerated border crossing opens up a competitive market for border crossings from mainland France to Corsica. Sardinia Ferries has launched the same GNV between Italy and Sardinia.

Launched in 2001, the Mega Express fast ferry has considerably increased its capacity and frequency, and opened links between the port of Toulon and the ports of Ajaccio, Calvi, Ile Rousses and Bastia.

In 2004, Corsica Ferries became the main passenger carrier to Corsica.

2004 also saw the launch of the Mega Express Three flagship at the border crossing with Sardinia.

In 2008, the company launched its new flagship, the Mega Smeralda, and launched blog.vivacorsica.com: a site for discovering Corsica, booking in Corsica, and discussing/communicating about Corsica.

In 2009, the Mega Express Five entered service. Over the course of the year, Corsica ferries carry more than 2,600,000 passengers between mainland France/Italy and Corsica.

In 2010, Corsica Ferries innovates by offering an iPhone application to customers and introduces GNV connections between Bastia and Piombino and Bastia and Livorno during the summer.

In 2010, a total of 2,778,300 passengers travelled between mainland France/Italy and Corsica: an increase of almost 4% on 2010.

In 2012, the Corse Express took over the Elba line, linking Piombino to Portoferraio in just 30 minutes!

From July to September, there are 4 departures a week from the port of Bastia to the island of Elba.

In 2013, Corsica Ferries became the official carrier of the Tour de France 2013, and Mega Smeralda was transformed into a floating press center for the event!

The Mega Smeralda's sister ship, the Mega Andrea, joined the company's fleet in June 2015.

The new line opened in 2016, from Toulon and Nice to Sardinia, with a new port in Corsica: Porto-Vecchio.

In June 2017, Pascal Lota was commissioned and became the flagship of the fleet.

In April 2018, Toulon is offering a new destination, Majorca.
